The Evolution of Kitchen Remodeling

The Evolution of Kitchen Remodeling

Over the years, kitchens have evolved from being just rooms with a stove and small refrigerator. Here is how today’s kitchens became rooms where we happily spend a lot of our time.

Early Appliances: The Stove, Refrigerator, and the Dishwasher

In the 1910s and 1920s, a bulky stove was the main appliance, and having multiple burners was an advantage. Refrigerators and dishwashers were small. Electronic appliances such as toasters, coffee percolators, and waffle irons required a storage solution: more kitchen cabinets.

Stainless Steel and Washing Machines Become Popular

In the 1930s linoleum floors, stainless steel cabinets, and sinks were preferred because they were easy to clean. And it became popular to put a new compact washing machine in the kitchen in the 1940s.

Kitchen Nooks for Seating Arrived

In the 1950s, a small kitchen nook with a bench became standard for families that wanted to gather in the kitchen for breakfast.

Refrigerators Get an Upgrade and a Demand for Semi-Open Kitchens Starts

Also in the 1950s all-in-one fridge and freezer appliances were in demand. During that time, semi-open gourmet kitchens modeled after restaurants made cooking at home more glamorous.

U-Shaped Kitchens Start to Trend

Julia Child was instrumental in making U-shaped kitchens popular in the 1950s. Cooking and conversing could occur without leaving the kitchen.

Bold Wall Prints, Kitchen Phones, and Range Hoods

Colorful wall prints covered large appliances, cabinets, and walls in the 1960s. Range hoods removed smoke from hot stoves.

Hidden Appliances, Open Shelving, and the Kitchen Island

The 1970s introduced hidden appliances behind wood exteriors. In the 1980s, there were open shelving and kitchen islands. Today, kitchen islands have become a place for loved ones to sit, talk, eat, work, and watch TV.

Countertops Get a Granite Makeover

In the 1990s, granite replaced laminate and wood countertops. In the 2000s, environmental thinking brought back the design of tiny homes, tiny kitchens, and tiny appliances. And in the 2010s, a resurgence started for large kitchens with multiple eating spaces, huge kitchen islands with built-in sinks, crisp white cabinetry, and wooden floors.
